What Will You Use to Hang Artwork When Staging a Property?

One of the questions I’m asked a lot when preparing a home for sale is:
“What do you use to hang artwork? Are you going to drill holes in my walls?”
It’s a very fair question. After all, most homeowners have just spent time and money getting their property ready for the market and the last thing they want is unnecessary damage to freshly painted walls.
The good news is that our professional property staging rarely requires drilling at all.
Lightweight Artwork is the Key
At Crystal Property Staging we carefully source and use lightweight canvases and artwork specifically for staging. These pieces create visual impact without the need for heavy fixings.
Because the artwork is lightweight we can usually hang it using very minimal fixings that are quick to install and leave little to no visible damage.
Our Go-To Hanging Methods
There are two main methods we use when hanging artwork during a staging installation:

1. Three-Pin Hooks
These are small picture hooks that use three very fine pins that gently press into the wall.
They’re ideal for:
- Lightweight canvases
- Quick installations
- Minimising wall damage
When removed, they typically leave tiny pin holes that are barely noticeable and very easy to fill if required.
2. Traditional Brass Hook and Pin
Sometimes the classic brass hook and pin is the best option.
This tried-and-tested method:
- Is extremely secure for lightweight artwork
- Leaves only a small pin hole
- Works well on most plastered walls
- It’s simple, reliable, and has been used for decades.

The Designer Trick: Propping Artwork
Not every piece of artwork needs to be hung.
In fact, one of the tricks interior designers use all the time is propping artwork instead of hanging it.
Larger pieces can look incredibly stylish when:
- Leaned on a mantelpiece
- Rested on a shelf
- Propped against a wall on a console table
- Styled on the floor beside furniture
This approach creates a relaxed, design-led look that feels contemporary and curated — perfect for property marketing photos.

Why Artwork Matters When Selling a Home
Artwork plays a surprisingly powerful role in property staging.
It helps to:
- Add personality without clutter
- Create focal points in key rooms
- Help buyers visualise how a space could feel to live in
- Make listing photos more eye-catching online
Since over 90% of buyers start their property search online, these visual details can make a big difference in how a home is perceived.
Thoughtful Styling Without the Damage
Our goal when staging a home is always the same:
maximum visual impact with minimal disruption to the property.
That means:
- Using lightweight artwork
- Avoiding drilling wherever possible
- Choosing clever styling solutions like propping artwork
- Leaving the property exactly as we found it
It’s all part of creating a beautiful, market-ready home that attracts buyers quickly.
