What is the difference between property staging and interior design?

We get asked this a lot and people often confuse the two, so here we attempt to explain.

Objective:

  • Property Staging: Aims to enhance a property’s appeal for sale by depersonalising and highlighting its best features.
  • Interior Design: Focuses on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces for long-term inhabitants.

Timing:

  • Property Staging: Occurs temporarily before listing a property for sale to attract potential buyers.
  • Interior Design: Takes place over a more extended period, involving in-depth planning and customisation to suit the homeowner’s preferences and needs.

Purpose:

  • Property Staging: Intends to create a neutral and welcoming environment that appeals to a broad range of prospective buyers.
  • Interior Design: Aims to reflect the homeowner’s personal style, taste, and specific lifestyle requirements

Scope:

  • Property Staging: Focuses on maximizing space, minimising clutter, and creating an inviting atmosphere using minimal furnishings and decor.

  • Interior Design: Involves a more comprehensive process, including furniture selection, colour schemes, lighting, and custom design elements to suit individual preferences

Duration of Impact:

  • Property Staging: Impact is short-term, aiming to make a memorable impression on potential buyers during property viewings.
  • Interior Design: The impact is long-term, creating a personalised and comfortable living space for the occupants over an extended period.
